Tomasino House
This historic structure (c. 1910) located in the heart of the National Register Historic District of Freedmen’s Town on the edge of downtown Houston had been severely damaged by fire in 2005. The Rutherford BH Yates Museum, a non-profit organization aimed at preserving the historic 4th Ward, adopted the project and addressed the site and structural assessment in Phase I. Phase II entailed carefully moving the building from its original location, to allow preparation of a new permanent and secure foundation. The new foundation was designed to provide long term stability for the structure using current construction practices, while recreating the visual appearance of the original foundation. The building was relocated onto its new foundation in its original placement on the site. Phase III continues with architectural documentation and preparation of construction documents for full restoration of the structure. The building will house an archaeology field school lab with archival and exhibit space.
