YMCA Cullen
Kerry Goelzer Associates worked with landscape architect Lauren Griffith on updating the facilities at the YMCA’s Camp Cullen. The YMCA Camp provides an opportunity for inner city children to spend time experiencing nature. The program included a new Chapel, Rifle Range Shelter with shooters’ stations, and the Archery Range Shelter. The Chapel serves as a stage for camp activities with a beautiful view of Lake Livingston beyond. The simple wood frame structure works well with the rustic, bucolic environment and the columns of the chapel are round posts reminiscent of pine trees. The open rail maintains the views to the lake. The simple shed construction of the rifle and archery shelters has a 2-tiered roof, providing increased cross ventilation and relief from the summer sun. The detailing of the solid wood benches and shooters’ tables completes the clean, utilitarian look.
